The Boston Red Sox wrapped up their series against the Kansas City Royals with a victory, and Willson Contreras showed that he is back in action.
Last August, Willson Contreras was booed by Boston Red Sox fans at Fenway Park after failing to run out a ground ball to first base. However, in the final game of the series against the Kansas City Royals, the first baseman looked much more active. With his hamstring injury seemingly behind him, Contreras showed the Fenway crowd that he is back to full strength as the 2026 MLB season enters its final stretch.
“I had to. I don’t want to get booed again. So I made sure my hamstring was 100%. I tested it last night in Portland. Went first to third. Felt good. And that’s why I decided to be activated today — because my leg felt great,” Contreras said, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith.
With just a handful of games left and a Wild Card berth still within reach, the BoSox continue to battle in the AL East. For Chad Tracy, Contreras’ return to full health is an encouraging development, providing a valuable boost to the depth and versatility of his roster.
Contreras’ impact on Boston
Before being placed on the injured list, Contreras was enjoying an impressive debut season in Boston. Across 125 games, he hit .274 with 26 home runs, 79 RBIs, and an .899 OPS, earning his fourth career All-Star selection in the process.
Batting in the heart of the lineup and leading the team in home runs, Contreras gave the Red Sox a dependable source of elite power and veteran leadership at first base. His presence made him a key middle-of-the-order weapon as Boston battled for a Wild Card spot.
Fighting for a spot in the postseason
The Red Sox are in a strong position to secure an AL Wild Card spot, carrying an 82–68 record with just 12 games remaining in the regular season. Although overtaking the Tampa Bay Rays for the division title is no longer realistic, Boston has built a comfortable lead over the teams chasing the top Wild Card seeds. Their final push begins tomorrow, September 15, with a three-game road series against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.
