The Houston Astros were hit with reality over the weekend and now have to refocus on Monday to prepare for an important homestand.
The Houston Astros entered their weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays with plenty of momentum after winning two of three games against the Philadelphia Phillies. However, that confidence quickly faded as the Astros were swept by the AL East leaders and now head back to Houston empty-handed.
Houston enters the off-day with a 75-75 record, clinging to a narrow one-game advantage over the Texas Rangers as the 2026 regular season approaches its conclusion. With roughly two weeks remaining, the Astros must demonstrate that they truly belong in the postseason rather than simply benefiting from a weak AL West division.
For the most part, Houston remained competitive against Tampa Bay through the first two games of the series. Still, Sunday’s finale turned into a nightmare, with the Astros suffering a lopsided 14-4 defeat. It was far from the result they wanted, but it’s the reality they now face, and manager Joe Espada understands just how crucial the next two weeks will be.
Espada Drops Honesty
Following Sunday’s lopsided defeat, Astros manager Joe Espada addressed the media and delivered a clear message about what his team needs to do moving forward.
“We have to enjoy the off day with our families and get back to work Tuesday. We don’t have much time left, but we’re still in first place. We need to make adjustments, learn from this experience, and move forward,” Espada said, via Space City Home Network on X (formerly Twitter).
Espada’s message couldn’t have been more straightforward: the clock is ticking for Houston. Throughout the season, the Astros have leaned on familiar reminders that “it’s a long season” and “we have time.” But with the regular season nearing its end, those assurances no longer carry the same weight.
Despite the sweep, Houston still has a 77% chance of reaching the playoffs, according to FanGraphs. The Astros have a 74.3% chance of winning the AL West and a 2.6% chance of securing a Wild Card berth. While the odds remain in their favor, that outlook could change quickly with the Texas Rangers pushing to return to the postseason for the first time since winning their first World Series title in 2023.
Performances like Sunday’s blowout loss cannot become a recurring problem down the stretch. If Houston wants to make noise in October, the Astros must play with greater consistency, confidence, and urgency.
Their upcoming six-game homestand will provide an important test. Houston will first welcome the Kansas City Royals for a three-game series before facing the Atlanta Braves, a team with World Series aspirations.
