Highly Conflicting; Maple Leafs’ $65 Million Winger Has ‘No Intention’ of Waiving No-Movement Clause

Mitch Marner, a forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has no intention of releasing his no-movement clause.

Marner’s six-year, $65,408,000 contract has one year left on it. It also grants him complete no-movement protection, which means he must consent to any trade. Despite being the focus of trade speculations, Marner hasn’t provided a list of teams to whom he would be willing to be traded and doesn’t have any plans to do so, according to NHL source Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

“Darren Ferris, the senior agent leading the Marner camp, is not currently working with a list of teams. As of right now, they have no plans to create such a list. Regarding the Marner camp, the talented winger is still under contract with the Leafs for one more year, and he plans to play for them, according to LeBrun’s piece.

Accordingly, this is all on what the Leafs bring to Marner this summer (if anything) and not the other way around, as best as I can determine at this precise moment. With his 100 percent no-move clause, which went into effect on July 1 of last year, Marner controls the majority of the cards, LeBrun added.

LeBrun notes that Marner is in control of his future; in spite of all the rumors to the contrary, he won’t be dealt if he doesn’t want to be.

Insider Statements There is a five percent chance. Marner Is Returning

While LeBrun reports that Marner and his representatives do not plan to waive their no-movement clause, Frank Servalli, another NHL insider, thinks the winger will be traded.

On May 19, Servalli stated on DFO Rundown, “I think there’s a five percent chance, maybe even less, that he’ll be a Leaf next season.” “It makes no sense to even start the season with the intention of trading Mitch Marner or extending his contract. It makes no sense for him to start this year, the last year of his contract. In my opinion, Mitch Marner’s chances of wearing a Maple Leafs uniform come October in the single digits.

Since Toronto selected Marner fourth overall in the 2015 NHL draft, he has been a member of the Maple Leafs. Since making his NHL debut in the 2016–17 season, he has been a standout performer for Toronto.

In 59 games during the previous campaign, Marner totaled 85 points with 26 goals and 59 assists. However, because of yet another early playoff elimination, trade rumors around the winger have surfaced.

Marner and Possible Predators Trade Linked

LeBrun claims that Marner has no plans to waive his no-movement clause, despite the fact that the talented winger has been connected to a possible contract with the Nashville Predators.

In a recent piece, NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period made fun of a trade that would have sent Marner to Nashville in exchange for goaltender Juuse Saros.

“The Nashville Predators are one team about which I have questions. At Bridgestone Arena, a top player like Marner would be well at home. Similar like Marner, goaltender Juuse Saros has a contract that is about to expire. Moving Saros forward to add more firepower up front might be exactly what the doctor ordered, as Pagnotta writes, with Yaroslav Askarov waiting in the wings.

Ilya Samsonov is a free agent this summer, so Toronto will need a new goalie. For the time being, however, Marner is still a Maple Leaf.
