The Milwaukee Bucks are going to acquire one of the top free agents still available! Guard Gary Trent Jr. will join the Bucks on a one-year contract, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Trent Jr. played for the Toronto Raptors for the previous three and a half seasons. He averaged over 16.4 points per game and made over 38% of his threes on over seven attempts. In the first year of a rebuild, it became improbable that Toronto would have the cap space or playing time available for Trent Jr., given the Raptors’ decision to take up Bruce Brown’s final year of contract, sign Immanuel Quickley and Scottie Barnes to large contracts, and select Baylor guard Ja’Kobe Walter 19th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The Raptors appeared to be going in a different way this summer, as rumors from The Athletic state that they never sent an offer to Trent Jr. The shooter’s market rapidly deteriorated as cap space was allocated to other players, and he now gets a veteran minimum contract with the Bucks, a playoff team that will most likely start him at shooting guard following the loss of Malik Beasley to the Detroit Pistons.
Due to financial constraints, the Bucks were unable to make any significant acquisitions this summer; nonetheless, they were able to bolster their roster after losing Beasley, Patrick Beverley, and Jae Crowder by adding point guard Delon Wright, wing Taureen Prince, and now Trent Jr. All things considered, the Bucks have done a nice job of adding three players to their core who might, to some extent, alleviate their defensive problems, despite the rigidity of their cap situation.
Trent Jr. will play alongside Damian Lillard again after their time together in Portland, and he will look to prove his worth on a one-year contract by joining a playoff squad alongside Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who will be able to provide him with open opportunities.
