Abdul Carter is Penn State’s best player. He might be the best defensive player in the entire country and the Nittany Lions held off Boise State 31-14 in the Fiesta Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal on New Year’s Eve without their superstar edge rusher for much of the game.
Carter left in the second quarter with a left arm injury that required evaluation in the sideline medical tent and prevented him from returning to the game. Head coach James Franklin didn’t provide much of an update but did say that “Abdul’s going to do everything in his power to try to get back,” when questioned on ESPN College Gameday on Wednesday morning. According to Carter’s social media on Thursday, everything includes leaning on medical equipment from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.
The junior defensive end, who was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year this season, his first since moving to the defensive line from his linebacker spot, posted an image of Darth Vader recovering in a “bacta tank.” It was his first post since December 21 and provided no additional context about the state of his injury or a timetable for his return.

The Nittany Lions desperately need Carter healthy for a CFP semifinal matchup against either Georgia or Notre Dame, so if they did get ahold of a bacta tank, that’s good news because anything that can help Anakin Skywalker recover from losing three limbs and burning alive on the volcanic surface of Mustafar can probably help Carter’s, still fully intact and attached, left arm heal.
