Yankees confirm injury after tense Old-Timers’ Day moment

After a disastrous Friday evening, Saturday was a success for the New York Yankees. The Old-Timers’ Day game took place for the first time since 2019 and the Bombers secured a clutch 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros.

But after the game ended, a Yankees spokesperson revealed legendary closer Mariano Rivera suffered an Achilles injury during the Old-Timers’ Day game. Roger Clemens told Suzyn Waldman and Dave Sims during the radio broadcast that Rivera was at the hospital because of it, which concerned fans, but everybody had to wait another hour for official confirmation.

Almost immediately, Yankees fans had flashbacks to when Rivera tore his ACL shagging fly balls before a road game in Kansas City back in 2012. An absolute bummer, especially after Rivera made a highlight play during the game and had some lovely things to say about the organization. He also told reporters that he planned to speak with struggling closer Devin Williams, who has been costing the Yankees games left and right over the last few weeks. Rivera received one of the loudest ovations of the afternoon.

It was wonderful to see all the players of yesteryear interacting with the current roster — a group that badly needs a gut check after doing 20-30 over their last 50 games — and this certainly took some air out of the balloon.

A #Yankees spokesperson confirmed that Mariano Rivera hurt his Achilles during the Old-Timers'Day game, as Roger Clemens told Suzyn Waldman. Severity unclear.

Rivera met with trainers, but the team didn't have any info beyond that.

Yankees News: Mariano Rivera suffered Achilles injury during Old-Timers’ Day game

Rivera ripped an impressive single off Andy Pettitte and was totally fine jogging to first base, so it’s unclear when the injury was sustained. The 55-year-old seemed to be in good spirits after the game, too. It was certainly a frustrating end to a day celebrating the 2000 World Series team. Rivera recorded the final out of that Fall Classic

Stay tuned for updates as the Yankees are likely to relay more information when they have it. Fans are sending their best to Rivera during this time.
