It’s clear that the atmosphere surrounding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has shifted with Baker Mayfield as quarterback, especially when compared to the three seasons they had with Tom Brady.
Mayfield has openly acknowledged this change, making significant allegations against Brady, who is now a commentator for Fox Sports.
Although Mayfield and Brady never played together in the NFL—since Mayfield was never in a position to back him up—Brady’s exit provided Mayfield with a crucial opportunity to revive his career with his fourth team.
Now, Mayfield seems at ease discussing his experiences within the franchise and reflecting on the dynamics during Brady’s tenure.
“You hear stories about how if he disagreed with a play call during the week and it was still used in the game, he might intentionally throw the ball away or aim it at the feet of a running back or receiver,” Mayfield shared on the *Casa De Klub* podcast.
“There’s a lot of psychological maneuvering happening.”
Mayfield also noted that those working at Buccaneers’ headquarters feel less “stressed out” now compared to when Brady was part of the team.
The results speak for themselves, as Tampa Bay reached the playoffs every season with Brady, winning the Super Bowl in 2021.
This statement holds true for the complete season Mayfield played with the NFC’s Florida team, where they lost in the Divisional round to the Detroit Lions last year.
“The atmosphere was a bit different with Tom in the building,” Mayfield remarked. “Clearly, Tom’s approach is unique. He had everyone focused, creating a high-pressure environment that left many feeling quite stressed.”
Currently, Mayfield and the Buccaneers are enjoying a strong start this season at 2-0, as they prepare to host one of the league’s struggling teams, the Denver Broncos, this Sunday.
