Jason Whitlock stated ‘no serious person’ should have Angel Reese in the running for WNBA Rookie of the Year, therefore ending her chances of winning the title.
Whitlock, who was a harsh opponent of the Chicago Sky rookie coming into this season, had previously backed off, claiming that she was “legitimizing” her candidacy for the award.
Whitlock, though, has made another U-turn following Reese’s poor performance, which included a 3-13 shooting day in a defeat over the New York Liberty on Saturday.
He scrawled, “Never again,” on X. “Anger Reese should never again be discussed as the rookie of the year by any serious person.” She simply lacks offensive skill. She has trouble making layups. She is a pleasant rebounder. She is not a “superstar.” She is a ruse to make Clark seem less important.
“Reese played 36 minutes and had zero impact,” he went on. Today, the double-double trick came to an end because Reese failed to convert too many clear-cut layups. There are multiple poor games. From three to four feet, she shoots at an absurdly low percentage.
Reese finished Saturday’s 81-67 Sky loss to the Liberty with eight points and sixteen rebounds. Her score in 36 minutes was similarly a -13.
Reese’s unprecedented 15-game double-double streak was notably snapped in the last seconds of the game when the Liberty players quadruple-teamed her, forcing her to give up the ball.
The Sky have now dropped two games in the previous three days against the Liberty, dropping to 9-14 on the season.
Reese has proven herself as a superb rebounder at the professional level right away, but she hasn’t shot the ball well—as of Saturday’s game, she was shooting just 41.1 percent from the field for the season.
Still, Whitlock had changed his mind about the No. 7 overall decision after being made aware of her double-double streak.
“Angel Reese is strengthening her case for rookie of the year, but that doesn’t mean I disagree with her,” Whitlock remarked. “But second place has to go to someone, and Angel Reese is putting up a good fight.”
Whitlock continued, “And if you’re putting up a fight for second place, that means you have an opportunity to put up a fight for first place.” “And Caitlin Clark is leaving the door slightly ajar for someone else to come in here as long as she keeps turning the ball over and shooting poorly from three-point range.”
For the Indiana Fever, Clark, meanwhile, is packing the stat sheet with 16.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game.
