Wyoming Cowboys & Head Coach Jay Sawvel Announce Another Major News Of Three Significant Players
Three former Wyoming Cowboy football players have received invites to participate in NFL Rookie Minicamps following this past weekend’s NFL Draft.
Safety Wyett Ekeler earned opportunities with both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Denver Broncos. Over his college career, he tallied 197 total tackles in 48 games. Despite suffering broken thumbs in 2024, which forced him to play with casts on both hands, he ended his final season with 46 tackles, one tackle for loss, and an interception. As a junior, Ekeler had a standout year with 77 tackles and two interceptions, earning Mountain West Player of the Week honors after recording two sacks against New Mexico. He also forced three fumbles during his college career.
Kicker John Hoyland has been invited to minicamps with the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos. A three-time All-Mountain West selection, including Honorable Mention in his final season, Hoyland converted 15 of 19 field goals in 2024. He was nearly automatic within 50 yards (14-of-15) and perfect inside 40 yards (7-of-7). His longest field goal of the season was a 54-yarder against Boise State, with another from 49 yards at Colorado State. He was named MW Special Teams Player of the Week after going 3-for-3 against Washington State. Hoyland finished his Wyoming career with a school-record 73 field goals made, third-most in Mountain West history, and set a school record with 366 career points.
Shay, who played in 49 games for Wyoming, will attend Rookie Minicamps with the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets. He finished his career with 97 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. His 2024 season was his most productive, with 76 tackles, all of his career tackles for loss, and all his sacks. He posted a personal-best 12 tackles against Colorado State and capped his college career with 1.5 sacks in the finale versus Washington State.
