The Los Angeles Angels are committed to making immediate additions, despite the fact that this approach might not be the most advisable given their current standing as a franchise. Last season, they were among the worst teams in the American League and are far from being just one or two signings away from becoming contenders. Nevertheless, they feel the need to begin somewhere.
Recent reports indicate that the Angels have their sights set on signing Pete Alonso. This surprising interest is directed toward the free-agent slugger, who has consistently demonstrated the ability to hit 40 home runs over the years. Alonso is the former first baseman for the New York Mets.
“Angels looking at it,” Jon Heyman said on Wednesday during a Bleacher Report live show (h/t SNY). “Again, I think it’s the years — possible gap there. They certainly are weighing that. I do believe Arte Moreno does want to get another big bat in there.
Alonso can help the Angels and virtually any lineup
He saved his best performance for last, going on an impressive streak in October that helped the Mets reach the National League Championship Series.
However, Heyman cautioned that free agent outfielder Anthony Santander is “probably a little more likely” for the Angels than Alonso. The former Orioles player has just come off a career-best season with 44 home runs, making him a valuable source of power.
Alonso’s market has somewhat stalled, which adds to the regret of his decision to decline a seven-year extension earlier in the season. Nevertheless, he is still expected to secure a multi-year contract, whether it’s with the Angels or another team.
