Winnipeg Blue Bombers sign four, including former NFL receiver Penny Hart

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added American receiver Penny Hart to their practice roster.

Hart, who stands five feet eight inches tall and weighs 180 pounds, played five years in the NFL. He appeared in 39 games for the Seattle Seahawks, recording 11 catches for 82 yards and rushing for 19 yards. Originally from Roswell, Georgia, he also had spells with the Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons.

The 28-year-old had an impressive college career at Georgia State University, where he made 203 receptions for 2,960 yards and 19 touchdowns. Additionally, he recorded 16 punt returns for 200 yards and one touchdown, along with 15 kick returns for 299 yards.

The Blue Bombers have also signed American quarterback Darren Grainger, American defensive end Brandon Wright, and American defensive back Russell Dandy to the practice roster.

Grainger previously participated in the team’s training camp but was cut during final roster decisions. He played the last three seasons at Georgia State University, earning honourable mention All-Sun Belt honors twice. Over 38 games, he completed 62.7% of his passes for 6,779 yards, with 57 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He also rushed for 2,130 yards and 19 touchdowns on 456 carries.

Standing six feet four inches tall and weighing 225 pounds, Grainger started his collegiate career at Furman University, where he earned a spot on the Southern Conference’s All-Freshman team in 2019. During 18 games with the Paladins, he completed 49% of his passes for 1,403 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions, while rushing 135 times for 349 yards and five scores.

Wright played five seasons at Michigan State University, initially joining as a running back. He carried the ball 24 times for 61 yards in his first two seasons before switching to the defensive line. The six-foot-two, 250-pound native of Euclid, Ohio, played 28 games on defense, recording 44 tackles, six tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one pass knockdown.

Dandy was also released by the Blue Bombers after training camp earlier this year. The six-foot, 170-pound native of Hinesville, Georgia, tallied 74 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, 24 pass knockdowns, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries over 25 collegiate games at Eastern Illinois University, earning first-team All-Big South Conference honors in his senior year. He attended rookie minicamp with the New York Jets after going undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-6) will face the Edmonton Elks (5-8) on Saturday, September 21, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
