Bills News: DeWayne Carter Reported to Rookie Minicamp in Buffalo

DeWayne Carter, the 23-year-old defensive tackle selected by the Buffalo Bills in the 2024 NFL draft, participated in his first practice with the team during their rookie minicamp this weekend. Carter joined the Bills’ nine other 2024 draft picks, 12 signed undrafted free agents, and 26 players trying out for the team. Bills fans eagerly anticipated seeing their newest defensive tackle in action.

In an interview with Bills reporter Maddy Glab, Carter expressed his excitement to join the team and earn his place on the roster.

He acknowledged the opportunity to learn from the team’s experienced veterans and praised the city of Buffalo, the coaching staff, and the Bills organization. Carter’s participation in the rookie minicamp marks the beginning of his journey with the Bills as he prepares to contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.

Not only a standout on the field, Glab highlighted his academic achievements as an All-American scholar. The emphasis on strong character among this year’s draft picks underscored the importance placed on integrity by Bills GM Brandon Beane. Carter shared that his upbringing instilled in him the value of treating others with respect, a principle he carries with him onto the field.

Encouraged by the warm reception from Bills Mafia, Carter expressed gratitude for the support shown by fans both online and in person, setting a positive tone for his journey with the team. Analyst Andy Young from Spectrum News 1 noted the Bills’ expectation for Carter to seamlessly integrate into the defensive line rotation, leveraging his skills, intelligence, and leadership qualities from the outset.

Carter Is Expected to Play Backup to Ed Oliver & DaQuan

According to Dane Brugler’s draft preview in The Athletic, DeWayne Carter was ranked as the twelfth-best defensive tackle prospect. During the 2023 season, the 6-foot-2, 302-pound tackle amassed impressive stats, including 41 total tackles, 4 pass deflections, 1 sack, and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. Brugler’s assessment highlighted Carter’s well-rounded skill set, noting his intelligence, strength, and high motor, despite lacking a standout trait.

While he may not project as a full-time starter, Brugler believes Carter will provide value as a rotational defensive lineman, capable of playing both three-technique in even fronts and five-technique in odd fronts. The Bills’ selection of Carter in the third round suggests they see him as a versatile piece who can contribute to their defensive line rotation immediately.
