Former Miami Dolphins wide receivers coach Wes Welker has a new home after being relieved of his duties by Mike McDaniel in January. The 3x NFL receptions leader has now shifted conferences, joining Dan Quinn’s coaching staff in Washington.
According to AP Sources, the official role they’re going with is “Personnel Analyst” to the front office and coaching staff.
Wes Welker, who was in the news last week as a worthy nominee for the Patriots Hall of Fame (672 catches over 6 regular seasons + another 69 in playoffs), is in the news again this week.
Welker, the former Dolphins WRs coach, has landed on the Commanders staff, per sources.

Welker, 43, joined the Dolphins in 2022 as the team’s wide receivers coach and appeared to be a favorite among fans and players alike. However, after video footage surfaced in Week 18 of Tyreek Hill refusing to return to the field, rumors began circulating that Welker’s departure could have something to do with Hill’s Week 18 antics. (A closer listen by me has revealed that a coach — perhaps, Welker— told Hill, “If you’re out, stay, don’t go on the field.”
Head Coach Mike McDaniel downplayed that the Welker’s release and Hill’s crashout were linked, saying “I could see why one could come to that conclusion; however, it wasn’t at all.”. He would then say he had to put the relationship he and Welker had aside and do what’s best for the team.
I honestly can’t say whether or not firing Welker was right, and I still have my doubts that Cheetah’s relationship with Welker didn’t play a factor. That said, we will likely never find out the truth. And with Robert Prince now in Miami and Welker on his way to coach the Commanders, that’s okay. But I still have my doubts!
Prior to his time with McDaniel in Miami, Welker spent three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers as their WRs coach under HC Kyle Shanahan. He will now be reunited with veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel, whom the Commanders traded for this offseason, and several skillful wideouts, including Terry McLaurin, Michael Gallup, and Luke McCaffrey.
Good luck, Wes! And THANK YOU, for EVERYTHING!
