After the 2024-25 season, Virginia Tech forward Tobi Lawal announced his intention to explore his NBA draft prospects while keeping his college eligibility intact. He made it clear that he would either be playing in the NBA next season or returning to Blacksburg.

On Tuesday, it was officially confirmed that Lawal would be back in Blacksburg.

Head coach Mike Young shared his thoughts on Lawal’s return:

We’re thrilled to have Tobi back in the maroon and orange. He approached the draft process with maturity, determination, and a desire to improve. The feedback he received will enhance his game, and we’re excited about what lies ahead for him and our program.”

Lawal also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to evaluate his draft prospects. “I appreciate the chance to explore the draft and learn from the process,” Lawal said. “It helped me identify areas for improvement—refining my overall game, gaining more experience through playing, and challenging myself to defend the best players every night. I’m eager to return to Virginia Tech with my teammates and coaches as we pursue our goals.”

This is a significant development for Young, even if it was anticipated. Lawal transferred to the Hokies from VCU last season and quickly became their standout player. Originally from London, England, he started all 30 games for Virginia Tech last season, averaging 12 points and seven rebounds per game while shooting 56% from the field.

Lawal will be back alongside Jaden Schutt, Tyler Johnson, and Ben Hammond from last season’s roster, which will also include transfers Izaiah Pasha, Jailen Bedford, Amani Hansberry, and a group of four freshmen.

The Hokies are still in the running for promising international talent Neoklis Avdalas, who is projected to be a top 40 pick in the NBA draft. If he opts to play in college, Virginia Tech is a strong contender.
