Texas Longhorns Included Among 7 Finalists For 5-Star Forward

Texas Basketball Enters New Era Under Coach Sean Miller, Eyes Five-Star Forward Anthony Thompson

The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball program is entering a new chapter following the dismissal of former head coach Rodney Terry. The university made a bold move by bringing in veteran coach Sean Miller, who arrives with a strong résumé and high expectations. One of Miller’s top priorities in the early stages of his tenure is securing a commitment from five-star recruit Anthony Thompson, a rising star in the 2026 recruiting class.

According to a report by Orange Bloods’ Jalen Brown, Thompson has whittled down his list of potential college destinations to seven elite programs: Michigan, Ohio State, North Carolina, Purdue, Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas. Ranked as the No. 2 small forward and the No. 8 overall player in the nation by 247Sports, Thompson is expected to be one of the most coveted prospects in his class.

Standing 6-foot-7 and weighing 185 pounds, Thompson is widely regarded as a dynamic offensive weapon with advanced shooting capabilities. His scoring potential, combined with his length and athleticism, makes him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.

Adam Finkelstein, Director of Scouting at 247Sports, praised Thompson’s offensive arsenal, saying:

“He’s a skilled left-handed forward with outstanding shot-making ability. His high-release shooting form is nearly impossible to block, allowing him to score even with tight coverage. Thompson can knock down both three-pointers and mid-range pull-ups consistently and has already shown signs of becoming an elite shooter.”

Despite receiving 32 scholarship offers, Thompson recently trimmed his list to seven programs, signaling a more focused recruitment process. For Texas, landing a player of Thompson’s caliber would be a major win—especially as the Longhorns aim to build momentum under their new coach.

Coach Sean Miller joined Texas in late March, just days after his Xavier squad eliminated Texas in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. His hiring marks a significant turning point for the Longhorns, who are seeking stability and success as they prepare for their second season in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Miller brings a wealth of experience, having served two successful coaching stints at Xavier (2004–09 and 2022–25), where he amassed a combined 185-87 record (.680 win percentage) and made six NCAA Tournament appearances, including one trip to the Elite Eight.

Now tasked with leading Texas in one of the most competitive basketball conferences in the country—home to national powerhouse programs like the reigning champion Florida Gators—Miller must hit the ground running. The Longhorns are still looking to secure their first commitment from the 2026 class, and a strong showing this upcoming season could help lure top-tier talent like Thompson to Austin.

The recruitment of Anthony Thompson will be a closely watched storyline as Texas attempts to reestablish itself as a major force in college basketball. With stiff competition from some of the sport’s blue bloods, Coach Miller and his staff will need to make a compelling case to land Thompson’s commitment.

In a new era filled with both opportunity and uncertainty, the Longhorns are banking on Miller’s leadership and recruiting prowess to elevate the program—and attracting a high-impact player like Thompson would be a monumental first step.
