Huge Boost for Devils as Shayne Gostisbehere Out With Upper-Body Injury

The 2018 17th overall pick will make his Hurricanes debut against his former club.

The Carolina Hurricanes will be without defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere as they take on the New Jersey Devils on Saturday as the blueliner has been ruled out with an upper-body injury.

The 31-year-old defenseman is eighth in blueline scoring this season with 27 points in 35 games and second in power play scoring by defensemen with 18 points on the man advantage.

He’s been a big offensive boost for Carolina and his absence will be a big blow for a team still looking for consistent scoring.

In his place, Ty Smith will make his Hurricanes debut against his former club.

Smith, 24, hasn’t played in the NHL in nearly two years as he last played Jan. 18, 2023 for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 2018 17th overall pick, who was selected by the Devils, has three goals and 10 points in 13 games with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL this season.

He will be playing alongside Sean Walker in Gostisbehere’s absence.
