According to reports by Ian Rapoport and Albert Breer, the Patriots are set to host two highly touted quarterback prospects, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels, for official top-30 visits in Foxboro soon. Maye and Daniels are commonly projected picks in mock drafts by outsiders and each brings unique skills to the table as New England aims to secure their future quarterback.
During the draft process, teams can invite up to 30 prospects to their facilities, and recent reports indicate that Maye and Daniels, along with other prospects like offensive tackle Travis Glover from Georgia State, wide receiver Javon Baker, and BYU offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia, have visited Foxboro in recent weeks.
Patriots scouts and coaches extensively observed both Daniels and Maye at their respective Pro Days last month, and now the team is finalizing its draft evaluations by hosting them at Gillette Stadium. Evan Lazar of Patriots.com also attended these Pro Days and shared his insights on what impressed him about Maye and Daniels.
While Caleb Williams from USC is widely considered the top prospect, Daniels and Maye are expected to be the second and third quarterbacks selected in the draft in less than three weeks. They each possess distinct strengths and weaknesses that have generated interest in when they will be drafted, with many projections indicating they could be picked second and third overall in Detroit.
Daniels is coming off an exceptional season at LSU, where he threw 40 touchdowns and rushed for 10 more, earning him consideration for the Heisman trophy. Supported by talented receivers like Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas, Daniels displayed outstanding performance in his fifth year of college football. His impressive speed and composed play in the pocket have been crucial to his success, although concerns exist among scouts regarding his slim build and arm strength.
Reflecting on his meeting with the Patriots at the Combine, Daniels commented, “It was good to be able to put a name to a face. It was great to talk and get to know them.”
In our latest mock draft, Maye was the chosen selection due to his promising physical attributes and high potential, which could bring excitement to the quarterback-needy Patriots. However, his inconsistencies in throws and decision-making are areas he must refine to maximize his abilities. The Patriots have engaged with Maye extensively this offseason, meeting with him at the Combine and before his Pro Day workout.
Impressed by the Patriots, Maye said, “I was really impressed with them. Coach Mayo, I first congratulated him. Anytime you become a new head coach is a pretty cool experience. So, just being in there, and New England is obviously a great sports town, and to meet with them, I thought it went well. I think New England’s a great spot.
