Updates on MSU’s Incoming Freshmen in Spring Practice
Michigan State football has welcomed a strong freshmen class this offseason as the program aims to enhance its reputation in recruiting under Jonathan Smith’s leadership.
Several of the 2025 recruits have already been active in spring practices, giving them an early opportunity to familiarize themselves with the playbook and compete against their teammates.
One standout mentioned recently is freshman defensive back Aydan West, a three-star recruit from Gaithersburg, Maryland.
“I really like Aydan,” commented veteran defensive back Malik Spencer. “He’s mature for his age, and I believe he’s ready to step in and contribute.”
On the offensive side, the Spartans have two promising freshmen wide receivers: three-stars Braylon Collier and Charles Taplin.
Rising sophomore Nick Marsh remembers being in their position a year ago. He has been mentoring Collier, drawing from his own experiences as a freshman.
“I’m just helping him get comfortable with the playbook and ensuring he has everything he needs,” Marsh explained. “I share the tips and strategies that worked for me that first year.”
Veteran receiver Alante Brown praised Charles Taplin, who comes from Red Oak, Texas, where he excelled in track as well.
“He [Taplin] has speed,” Brown said with a smile. “He’s a tall guy with good hands but still has that youthful mentality and technique. Coach Hawk [Courtney Hawkins] has done a great job preparing him and refining the skills he had in high school to suit the college game. He’s already making an impression with his speed and potential.”
Michigan State has signed one quarterback for the 2025 class, Leo Hannan, a three-star from Anaheim, California.
Offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren offered a brief comment on the freshman last week.
“Leo is still young and learning, but he’s had some effective reps when he’s been on the field,” Lindgren said.
More freshmen will join as training camp approaches, but so far this spring, the players mentioned have stood out and show promise for the future.
