As part of this deal, which was announced on January 6, Martin will receive a $1 million signing bonus and a salary of $4.5 million. For reaching 45 and 50 innings, he can earn $150,000 each, and an extra $200,000 for pitching 55 innings. Last season, Martin recorded a 3-1 record and a 3.45 ERA in 45 relief outings for Boston, striking out 50 batters in 44 1/3 innings, while allowing only three walks, the fewest among qualified relievers in Major League Baseball.

Over the past two years with the Red Sox, he maintained a 2.16 ERA in 100 games. At 38 years old, Martin holds a career record of 16-18 with a 3.38 ERA and 14 saves in 369 appearances, all as a reliever. He began his career with the Colorado Rockies in 2014, pitched for the New York Yankees in 2015, and then spent time in Japan before his first tenure with the Rangers.

The Rangers traded Martin to Atlanta in 2019, and he later played for the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022 before signing a two-year, $17.5 million deal with the Red Sox as a free agent.
