Former Coug quarterback John Mateer will officially join former WSU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle as a Sooner at the University of Oklahoma.
He posted on Instagram with the caption, “Santa came early and he’s a sooner,” to announce his choice.According to reports, the University of Miami and the University of North Carolina were interested in Mateer. According to Chris Hummer of CBS Sports, Mateer was offered the biggest NIL contract in NCAA history by UNC, which is currently led by NFL legend Bill Belichick.
Kendrick Brown, Mateer’s high school coach, told 247sports, “I believe the message was that he was the top quarterback in the portal.”
It seems that UNC actively pursued Mateer as Belichick looked for his future quarterback. He
NFL greats Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady tried to persuade Mateer to relocate to the east coast by face-timing him.
Baker Mayfield, a former Heisman-winning quarterback and current starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, reportedly called Oklahoma in response. Due to their similar aggressive playing styles, Mateer and Mayfield have been compared.John Canzano claims that Auburn, which made Mateer an offer of more than $1.5 million in October, was also considering Mateer.But in the end, Oklahoma’s pitch prevailed. Mateer is expected to make more than $3 million, and the appeal of being near home must have played a role. Mateer hails from Little Elm, Texas, where the University of Oklahoma is located just two and a half hours south of Norman where the University of Oklahoma is located.
Now headed to the SEC alongside his former OC and QB coach, Mateer still has a lot to prove but will be surrounded by a talented roster that has the resources to help him reach the next level.
