Update: Michael Andlauer makes an honest confession concerning Arber Xhekaj

Prior to the Habs-Senators game, TVA Sports aired a fascinating interview by Renaud Lavoie with the former minority owner of the Canadiens, now the owner of the Senators. The interview took place in Gatineau, just meters from the site of the team’s future arena. The view is stunning, and as a Gatineau local, I can assure you that photos and videos don’t do it justice. Andlauer is excited about the project’s completion, but emphasizes that it’s aimed at benefiting future generations rather than the immediate future.

He hopes to see a home-level face-off within five years. He’s especially eager for that face-off to be against the Canadiens, a rivalry that he believes is becoming increasingly intense. Regarding this rivalry, he noted that Arber Xhekaj is a key player—someone who was once loved but now frustrates him. With a laugh, he mentioned to the TVA Sports reporter that the defender “drives him crazy” and that he believes Xhekaj is capable of playing better than he currently is.

When Marc Bergevin and the Montreal management signed the player known as 72, he was part of the Hamilton Bulldogs in the OHL, a team that Andlauer oversaw as the boss. Years later, it’s somewhat ironic that this former protégé is now a thorn in his side, especially after he challenged his “superstar” Tim Stutzle, which didn’t sit well. In addition to discussing arena projects and the situation with Xhekaj, Andlauer admitted to Lavoie that leaving the Canadiens was tough for him. Growing up in Montreal, he has cherished memories of his idols, particularly Guy Lafleur. The chance to lead his own team was an incredible opportunity that he couldn’t let pass by—which is entirely understandable. He’s very committed now, and it seems the future of the Ottawa team is promising under his leadership. On TVA Sports, Patrick Lalime, who spent a few years in Ottawa, spoke with Jacques Martin and Chris Phillips, both of whom are excited about the arrival of the new owner. To stir the pot, Renaud Lavoie asked Andlauer at the end of the interview whether he supports the idea of the Nordiques returning to Quebec City. Andlauer responded enthusiastically, noting a parallel between his city and the nation’s capital: “Absolutely.” Overall, a refreshing change has come to Ottawa, and through Renaud Lavoie’s interview, it’s clear that Michael Andlauer is the ideal person to help reestablish the Senators’ presence.

– An unmissable date.
