College football is set to return in less than a month, bringing back all the chaos and excitement that make the sport both thrilling and unpredictable—on and off the field.

Right now, it’s the off-the-field drama grabbing headlines, with a new report involving former Memphis Tigers defensive back Tahj Ra-El stirring controversy.

According to TigerSportsReport.com, Ra-El allegedly sent direct messages to UTSA Roadrunners quarterback Owen McCown, which reportedly included Memphis’ playbook ahead of the matchup between the two teams.

To make matters worse, the Tigers ended up losing that game to the Roadrunners, 44-36. The 2024 season turned out to be Ra-El’s only year with Memphis, after spending his first three college seasons at Old Dominion.

If the allegations are true, Ra-El’s actions could easily be seen as a low blow.

You can dislike coaches or the school all you want, but handing over the playbook is a slap in the face to your teammates—the guys you suit up with every week. Still, it raises an interesting question: could UTSA face consequences if they actually used the leaked information?

Personally, it seems like fair game—after all, they didn’t ask for it. But the NCAA tends to operate by its own rulebook. If this hadn’t come to light, it likely wouldn’t be an issue. Now that it has, there’s a real chance the NCAA launches an investigation.

With NIL restrictions loosening, the NCAA is always looking for something else to enforce. Even minor controversies like this can quickly snowball into a full-blown probe.
