Update: Knicks lose professional basketball player to a serious injury

New York Knicks guard sustained a severe shoulder injury during their 111-105 preseason win against the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday. This is a major setback not only for Shamet himself but also for the Knicks’ bench.

Shamet injured his right shoulder while attempting to steal an entry pass during the third quarter. He immediately appeared to be in significant pain and was taken to the locker room, not returning to the game. He scored eight points in 20 minutes of play and started since New York rested all their usual starters. Before the injury, Shamet seemed well-positioned to make the active roster and become a key player off the Knicks’ bench. He is currently on a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 deal. Head coach Tom Thibodeau has commended the veteran guard throughout the preseason, noting that Shamet “had a terrific camp” (h/t New York Daily News’ Kristian Winfield). Now, the Knicks will need to find a replacement for him on the active roster and possibly in their rotation. They will miss his strong shooting skills, especially since he was expected to fill the role of Donte DiVincenzo after his trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Karl-Anthony Towns deal earlier this month.

Shamet’s injury opens the door for veteran wing TJ Warren to secure a place in the rotation. Warren, who is also on a non-guaranteed deal, has demonstrated his potential as a reliable depth option during the preseason. He recorded 11 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes of play on Tuesday night against Charlotte. Warren could serve as a valuable backup wing for the Knicks, addressing the bench’s overall lack of size and athleticism. His athletic ability and experience could be advantageous for a second unit primarily made up of younger players still honing their skills.

The Knicks have the option to retain Shamet’s contract while he rehabilitates and keep him on the regular season roster. However, it’s uncertain if they are inclined to do so, as this would significantly deplete their bench. As a result, he may be waived to create cap space without losing a crucial spot in the rotation. More information about Shamet’s long-term status will be available before Friday’s preseason finale against the Washington Wizards, but it’s becoming increasingly apparent that he will be unavailable for the start of the new season.
