UNLV Starting QB Matthew Sluka Leaves Program Over Unfulfilled ‘Commitments’

UNLV starting quarterback Matthew Sluka has opted out of the remainder of the season after the team’s strong start. On Tuesday night, Sluka released a statement via social media indicating he would not participate in any more games this year. The senior intends to utilize a redshirt year due to UNLV not fulfilling the commitments made to him during his transfer from Holy Cross this offseason.

“I have decided to utilize my redshirt year and will not be playing in additional games this season,” Sluka wrote on X. “I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled. Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

Though Sluka did not go into detail, it is likely that the “commitments” he mentioned are related to a name, image, and likeness (NIL) agreement. His decision highlights the significant changes occurring in college football in recent years.

In three games, Sluka has completed 21 of 48 passes for 318 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. He has also contributed 253 rushing yards and one touchdown on 39 attempts.

Despite Sluka’s departure, UNLV has started the season strong at 3-0, securing notable road victories over Kansas and Houston. This success positions them as a contender from the Group of Five conferences for a spot in the upcoming 12-team College Football Playoff. They are set to host Fresno State for their first game in the Mountain West Conference on Saturday.
