Unexpected Second Chance: Bucs Eyes New QB Michael Pratt in the Draft

Bucs Targeted QB Michael Pratt in the Draft

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers considered selecting Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt late in the draft but missed the opportunity. They were pleased to secure him later, viewing him as a valuable developmental prospect.

In April, the Green Bay Packers picked Pratt as the 245th overall selection with their first seventh-round pick. Had they chosen differently—like opting for Penn State cornerback Kalen King—Pratt’s wait for a call could have ended much sooner. The Buccaneers had the next pick at 246, where they selected Washington tight end Devin Culp, who impressed in training camp.

However, the Bucs got a second chance when the Packers acquired Malik Willis, leaving Pratt available after he was waived along with many other players around the league. The Bucs quickly signed him to their practice squad after he cleared waivers, initially expected to take John Wolford’s spot.

With only two quarterbacks, Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask, on their active roster, the Bucs plan to elevate Pratt as necessary. They see him as more than a temporary backup.

“We liked him in the draft process,” said Head Coach Todd Bowles. “He’s a very good game quarterback with the ability to throw accurately and smartly under pressure. We believe we have a player we can develop, not just a practice squad option.”

Pratt started 44 of 45 games during his four seasons at Tulane, earning Freshman All-American honors in the 2022 COVID-shortened season and was named AAC Offensive Player of the Year last year after throwing for 2,406 yards with 22 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Over his college career, he amassed 9,603 yards and 90 touchdowns, also showcasing his ability to rush effectively.

As Kyle Trask enters his second season as Mayfield’s main backup, he’s on the last year of his rookie deal. While Bowles has confidence in Trask, if he doesn’t return next season, the Buccaneers may view Pratt as a long-term option with starting potential. They are eager to see how he can contribute.
