The Iowa Hawkeyes recruited Drew Thelwell from Morehead State in advance of the 2024–25 men’s collegiate basketball season.
Thelwell provides Iowa with a seasoned presence in the backcourt. Over the previous two seasons, Thelwell participated in and started all 68 games for Morehead State, leaving the program as the most successful player in Eagles history.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound graduate guard finished the previous season with an average of 10.0 points, 6.2 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. Last year, Thelwell shot 33.8% from 3-point range and 43.5% from the field.
Thelwell led the engine as Morehead State won the OVC Tournament and shared the Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship the previous year. The Eagles made two trips to the NCAA Tournament, two OVC Tournament championships, and two regular season titles when he was at Morehead State.
The new Iowa point guard, Thelwell, gave some insight into his experience with the move as he gets adjusted to life with the Hawkeyes.
It really has been wonderful. Not too bad, only the bump up has been. I would say there are a lot more food alternatives, but overall, everyone has been friendly, and it’s been a pleasure to be here.
“I believe that after my visit, it felt like home.” Though, to be honest, the coaches continued phoning, the men were still good guys. And I’m sure the coaches are keeping an eye on things if they keep phoning, so that’s probably what happened.
“They play quickly. We used a slower method at my last school. I realize it’s an entertaining way to play, but I’m not used to seeing so many points on the board in the games I’ve watched.
“Well, I know I can pass the ball really well, and finding a guy on the floor who can light it up like Payton Sandfort and just playing quick is what I do.” being a pro and getting the ball ahead. Simply playing the appropriate game.
Without a doubt. I really enjoy playing basketball with him because he has a terrific head and feel for the game. He still has a lot of basketball left in him. He is excellent.
Yes, I agree that it hasn’t been a terrible shift overall. I would say that all I’m really learning at the moment is the plays and how to perform them faster. Not too awful.
Most challenging? Probably just getting acclimated to the length, in my opinion. It’s just not what you usually see in the OVC, but after two weeks, I kind of got used to it. I get used to Owen Freeman standing down there really quickly.
Thus far, I believe Owen and Payton are both doing a very wonderful job leading. I’m aware that he returned this year. He made the decision to return. In addition to texting me directly and our group chat, he’s also doing an excellent job leading.
