The Cincinnati Bengals signed offensive tackle Trent Brown to a one-year contract, prompting former linebacker Vontaze Burfict to share his thoughts on the agreement through social media. Burfict and Brown were teammates during Brown’s brief one-year tenure with the Oakland (Las Vegas) Raiders in 2019. Despite entering the league three years after Burfict, Brown has remained in the NFL longer than him.
Burfict and Brown both spent time with the Raiders, with Burfict playing for one year and Brown for two. During the 2019 season, Burfict appeared in just four games while Brown participated in 11. Subsequently, Burfict was no longer in the league the following year, while Brown remained with the Raiders but only played in five games. Despite Brown garnering recognition as the 11th top tackle in the league, based on his Pro Football Focus grade of 80.2, his durability poses a concern for Cincinnati. Throughout his nine-year NFL career, Brown has only completed three full seasons, with two of those occurring in the initial four years.
In the combined 2020 and 2021 seasons, Brown featured in just 14 games. Although he managed to remain healthy for an entire season in 2022, the 30-year-old tackle couldn’t sustain that streak in 2023. Standing at 6 feet 8 inches and weighing 370 pounds, Brown, when in good health, presents an upgrade to the Bengals’ offensive line situation from 2023. In an article from NFL.com, Brown elaborated on his versatility, stating, “That’s what I do best…I think that’s why I’m here. You won’t find another tackle in the league or game of football that does that better than me. I have a unique set of skills in that regard.”
