UConn Coach Geno Auriemma Calls Out NCAA for Major Change Ahead of Final Four Game

UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma seemingly couldn’t wait to voice his opinion about the apparent lack of thought that the NCAA put into the fairness of travel to the Final Four and how it could affect teams.

The very first question he was asked during his press conference Thursday was about South Florida coach Jose Fernandez becoming the new president of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Auriemma, who is friends with Fernandez, managed to turn it into a statement on the travel.

The Huskies were forced to fly Tuesday from their regional in Spokane, Wash. to the Final Four in Tampa, Fla. after playing the latest game of all the regionals at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time Monday night.

“We need to change the schedule,” Auriemma said. “We have to finish way earlier so that we don’t come here Tuesday night, 3,000 miles, practice Wednesday and Thursday and then play the biggest game of the year on Friday night at 9:30.”
