UConn announces big Paige Bueckers news before NCAA tournament
With the college basketball regular season wrapped up for the women’s game, conference tournaments have begun, and while the No. 3 seed Connecticut Huskies await their opponent on Saturday in the Big East Tournament, a major announcement came out of the program on Thursday.
The Huskies are led by star guard Paige Bueckers, and after a tremendous senior season—one that was honored during Senior Day on Sunday—the Big East and UConn revealed that Bueckers has been named the Big East Player of the Year, alongside her head coach, Geno Auriemma, who was named the Big East Coach of the Year.
This season, Bueckers has averaged an impressive 18.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.1 steals, while shooting 53.4% from the field, 40.8% from the 3-point line, and 88.8% from the free-throw line.

Bueckers was also joined by teammates Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd on the All-Big East First Team, marking another astonishing accomplishment for the program to hold three of those five spots.
However, their focus remains squarely on competing for a national championship, which they haven’t been able to win since 2016. Now, with it likely being Bueckers’ final season, that has been her primary goal after all the challenges she’s faced in her collegiate career, including a major knee injury that sidelined her for an entire season.
“Obviously, very excited,” Bueckers said when asked about the NCAA Tournament. “This is what you prepare for your whole entire life, whole entire season. I don’t know. I’m just excited. March is great. Playing during this time is great.”
She added, “I think we’re growing every single day. Like my other years here at college, the coaches do an amazing job preparing us for whatever is going to come our way. I think our chemistry is growing. We want to be playing our best basketball right now but I think we have the tools and we just need to continue to keep getting better.”
