Tyrann Mathieu, LSU great, announces retirement from football
The Honey Badger is calling it a career. LSU great Tyrann Mathieu announced Tuesday that he has retired from football.
Mathieu shared the news via social media, posting a photo of his cleats hanging up.
As I hang up my cleats, I’m filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that’s shaped me in every way,” Mathieu wrote in the caption of his Instagram post.
From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community.
A New Orleans native and product of St. Augustine High School, Mathieu joined the LSU Tigers as part of the program’s 2010 signing class. He only played 2 seasons before his August 2012 dismissal. Mathieu has a sensational 2011 season, earning SEC Defensive Player of the Year and consensus All-American honors while winning the Chuck Bednarik Award.
Mathieu was taken in the 3rd round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent his first 5 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He then played for the Houston Texans (2018), Kansas City Chiefs (2019-21) and New Orleans Saints (2022-24).
Awards and honors for Mathieu’s pro career include 3 first-team All-Pro selections, 3 Pro Bowls and recognition on the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. He picked up a Super Bowl ring with the Kansas City Chiefs for their win in Super Bowl LIV.
