Tyler Johnson Send Strong Message To Fresno State Bulldogs After A Huge Development
Former Fresno State standout Tyler Johnson is returning to the Bulldogs’ basketball program—this time as an assistant coach. Johnson, a key figure in the team’s brief resurgence over a decade ago, expressed his excitement in a statement released by the athletics department: “I’m excited for the chance to come back to the valley. I look forward to being part of this program’s transformation.”
Johnson played for Fresno State from 2011 to 2014, averaging 15.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in his senior year. That season, the Bulldogs finished 21-18—marking their first 20-win campaign in six years—and made it to the championship series of the College Basketball Invitational under then-head coach Rodney Terry. Two years later, Terry guided the team to the NCAA Tournament, but the program has since struggled, with last season being its worst. Head coach Vance Walberg’s debut year ended with a 6-26 record, the fewest wins in school history.
A two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection, Johnson went on to enjoy an eight-year NBA career, playing for the Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, and San Antonio Spurs.

“We’re excited to welcome Tyler Johnson back to Fresno State,” said Walberg. “As a former Bulldog and seasoned pro, he brings valuable experience, passion, and a strong connection to this program. His journey through the NBA is something our players can really learn from.”
