ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on Feb. 21 that the Tennessee Volunteers and Nebraska Cornhuskers are cancelling their upcoming home-and-home football series in 2026 and 2027.
But after Thamel tweeted his report, Tennessee athletic director Danny White offered clarification on social media. White tweeted it was not the Volunteers who cancelled the series. “Correction: Tennessee is not canceling this series. Nebraska did,” White wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“We are very disappointed that they didn’t want to play these games, especially this close to 2026.” Tennessee was scheduled to visit Lincoln on Sept. 12 during Week 2 of the 2026 season. The Volunteers were then set to host the Cornhuskers nearly a year later on Sept. 11 in Knoxville.
Tennessee and Nebraska have been trying to meet on the football field for quite some time. The two schools originally scheduled a home-and-home series in 2006 for 2016 and 2017.
In 2013, the two schools agreed to postpone the series for a decade. White was disappointed with not only the cancellation but the lateness of the change.

Thamel tweeted that the main reason for the cancellation to the series was because Nebraska wanted an extra home game in 2027 when the program is expected to undergo stadium renovations and will have reduced stadium capacity.
