USC aggressively pursued several top local recruits during its Junior Day event last month, leading to the commitment of consensus four-star defensive lineman Simote Katoanga shortly afterward.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound player, who recently transferred to Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Santa Margarita Catholic, is currently ranked No. 59 overall in the 2026 recruiting class according to 247Sports. USC is focusing intensely on securing elite talent for its defensive line, both through high school recruits and the transfer portal.

247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Tom Loy identified Katoanga as one of five junior day visitors who could potentially join the Trojans by December.

“USC is prioritizing Katoanga, and there’s a lot of excitement surrounding the Trojans right now, especially with the coaching staff intensifying their efforts recently,” Loy stated. “While other strong contenders are in the mix, keep an eye on the Trojans in this situation.”

Loy proved to be spot on regarding Katoanga. Now, USC has secured the commitment of a top-tier local player in a position where they have significant need. So, what can the Trojans expect from Katoanga on the field if they successfully retain him until signing day?

National recruiting analyst Greg Biggins provided a highly encouraging assessment of Katoanga.

“Katoanga is an interesting defensive line prospect with significant potential,” Biggins noted. “He primarily played as an edge rusher during his sophomore year, but he has the build to add weight and transition inside at the college level. He stands at 6-5 and weighs 250 pounds, with an 80-inch wingspan. We can envision him easily adding another 40 pounds without sacrificing his natural athleticism. He plays with high energy and is relentless in pursuit of the ball. He demonstrates pass-rushing skills both off the edge and as a tackle, and he’s tough in run defense. He can engage with blocks, maintain his position, and still push forward. While he has displayed more potential than actual production on the field so far, the attributes are certainly there.”
