Revamping the Roster: The Red Wings’ Bold Move to Acquire Yegor Sharangovich.
The Detroit Red Wings have been in a playoff drought for far too long, and it’s clear that the team is determined to end that streak in the upcoming 2024-25 NHL season. One bold move that has caught the attention of hockey fans is a hypothetical trade that would see the Red Wings acquire goal-scoring sensation Yegor Sharangovich from the Calgary Flames.
The proposed deal, created using the PuckPedia PuckGM tool, would send Sharangovich to Detroit in exchange for a package that includes the Red Wings’ top prospect, Nate Danielson, goaltender Ville Husso, and a 2025 second-round pick.
Sharangovich, who is entering the final year of his current contract, recently signed a lucrative five-year, $28.75 million extension with the Flames. Acquiring the 26-year-old forward would give the Red Wings a proven goal-scorer to bolster their offense, and the long-term nature of the deal would make him a perfect fit for Detroit’s young core.
Last season, Sharangovich thrived in Calgary, recording 31 goals and 28 assists for a total of 59 points in 82 games. The forward credited the trust and support from the Flames’ coaching staff as a key factor in his success, and he’s eager to build on that momentum in the upcoming campaign.
“I’m comfortable here, but the first thing when coaches trust you, they support you in the game,” Sharangovich told NHL.com. “It’s a really good thing for me and for my game. I think I had a really good season last year because coaches almost always (trusted) me, I played a lot, I think I’m ready for next season.”
For the Red Wings, the potential addition of Sharangovich would be a significant boost as they look to end their eight-year playoff drought. General manager Steve Yzerman believes the team’s offseason moves, which include the signings of Vladimir Tarasenko, Cam Talbot, and the re-signing of Patrick Kane, have made the roster “a little bit different” and “a little bit better” compared to last season.
“I think we’re in with that group of teams that has a chance to compete for the playoffs,” Yzerman said. “If we stay healthy, if our goaltending is good and players outplay your expectations, we might get in. Or you might just miss by a point on the last game of the season.”
As the Red Wings gear up for their season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 10th, the potential acquisition of Yegor Sharangovich has added an exciting new chapter to the team’s quest to return to the postseason.
