The Montreal Canadiens have already made a significant move this offseason by acquiring Patrik Laine, and there’s speculation about acquiring another star forward.
Using the PuckGM tool on PuckPedia, one user suggested a trade that would bring Jonathan Huberdeau from the Calgary Flames to the Canadiens.

This potential trade would be notable as it involves Montreal and Calgary exchanging forwards who have both faced challenges under their current contracts, with Montreal also trading a first-round pick in exchange for a second-round pick.
Huberdeau, entering the second year of his eight-year, $84 million contract, would join the Canadiens. The proposed deal would have Calgary retain $3 million per season, lowering Huberdeau’s salary to $7.5 million annually.
In his first season with Calgary, Huberdeau played 81 games, tallying 12 goals and 40 assists for a total of 52 points. Throughout his career, he has played 831 games, scoring 225 goals and providing 495 assists for 720 points, making him a potential top-six forward for Montreal.
On the other hand, Dvorak is in the final year of his six-year, $26.7 million contract. He has struggled in Montreal, managing only 5 goals and 4 assists in 30 games last season. He would fit into Calgary’s middle-six forward group and might be traded for additional assets at the deadline.
Huberdeau Optimistic for a Comeback Season.
Huberdeau was part of the major trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in 2022. Throughout two seasons with the Flames, he hasn’t fully met expectations. However, as the 2024-25 NHL season approaches, Huberdeau expresses renewed confidence.
“I think more speed… I’m not the fastest guy, but I’ve gained a lot of power and had ample time to work on it,” Huberdeau told NHL.com. “I’m really happy with my summer training; it’s probably been the best I’ve had. I just need to translate that onto the ice. I skated more this summer, so I feel better.
“My confidence is back. I need to share that with the team, and this year I want to bring enjoyment to my game. That’s essential for us as a team. We need to have fun, and who knows? We might surprise some people,” he added.
In total, Huberdeau has played 160 games for the Flames, accumulating 27 goals and 80 assists for 107 points.
