TRADE: MacFarland Isn’t Done as Avalanche Acquire Tanother top forward

Chris MacFarland continues to push forward in his efforts to enhance the Colorado Avalanche roster ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline, showing a penchant for making rapid consecutive moves.

Shortly after securing Brandon Duhaime, the Avalanche swiftly added Yakov Trenin from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Jeremy Hanzel and a 2025 third-round pick, alongside prospect Graham Sward. This series of acquisitions has revamped Colorado’s fourth line and poised to bolster their fifth line. Additionally, they anticipate further reinforcement with the potential addition of Nikolai Kovalenko, whose KHL team is nearing elimination.

Standing tall at 6’2″, Trenin, known as one of Nashville’s most threatening forwards during the 2022 first round, has tallied 10 goals and 14 points in 60 games this season, predominantly playing on the wing.

Addressing the media post-trade, Jared Bednar expressed versatility in Trenin’s potential roles, stating, “Not sure yet. Got to talk to him. I’ve seen him play center. I’ve seen him play wing, effective in both positions.” As a pending unrestricted free agent earning $1,700,000 this season, Trenin provides Colorado with salary cap flexibility for further acquisitions.

Both Duhaime and Trenin are poised to make immediate impacts, with their penalty-killing expertise being particularly valued. Bednar highlighted their physical presence and work ethic, essential attributes for navigating through tough opponents in the Western Conference.

Despite Chris Wagner’s injury sidelining him for at least one game, the Avalanche’s recent additions offer depth and resilience to manage his absence effectively. The Avalanche’s roster evolution under MacFarland’s direction suggests a continuous drive to improve and a commitment to success.
