Ottawa winger Vladimir Tarasenko is expected to be traded soon as the Senators are far from playoff contention. Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reports that the Panthers, Hurricanes, Bruins, Rangers, Golden Knights, and Oilers have shown interest in acquiring him, with Florida being a top choice for Tarasenko.
The 32-year-old has had a strong season with Ottawa, his first season with the team after signing a one-year, $5 million deal in free agency. Tarasenko has contributed 17 goals and 24 assists in 57 games, ranking fifth on the team in scoring. It’s worth noting that he has achieved these numbers with slightly reduced playing time compared to his usual average, with his current average ice time of 16:03 being the lowest since his second season in 2013-14. If Ottawa agrees to retain up to 50% of his contract, they could receive a good return in any potential trade.
Reportedly, Senators GM Steve Staios is seeking a trade package that includes a second-round pick and a prospect in exchange for Tarasenko. Tarasenko has full trade protection, meaning he has the final say on where he goes. Additionally, he recently changed agents for the second time in less than a year, sparking speculation that he might seek a contract extension as part of any trade deal to avoid a situation like last July when he settled for a one-year deal with Ottawa after teams didn’t meet his initial demands.
Considering the salary cap constraints of some potential suitors for the current season, extending Tarasenko’s contract could be challenging. This limitation may narrow down the list of teams interested in acquiring him, unless they can work out the cap situation both now and in the future.
While Tarasenko was highly sought after last year at the trade deadline, this time around, he may not command as high a return. Nonetheless, as a veteran with 97 playoff appearances, he could be a valuable addition for a playoff contender seeking secondary scoring help.
