Two-time American League All-Star Alex Bregman is one of the top remaining MLB free agents. Spending his entire nine-year career with the Houston Astros, Bregman could be looking for a change of scenery this offseason.
Bregman posted a .768 OPS in 145 games for Houston last season, tallying 26 home runs and 75 RBI. For his career, Bregman owns an .848 OPS that ranks 20th among active players.
A first-time Gold Glove winner in 2024, Bregman gets it done on defense and offense. The two-time World Series champion has been linked to multiple teams this offseason, with the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox being named the co-favorites to sign him (per Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY).
After it was reported on Jan. 27 by KPRC 2 Houston’s Ari Alexander that the Astros had not changed their six-year, $156 million offer to Bregman, an additional report revealed Boston’s decision.
Despite Houston’s six-year offer to Bregman that reportedly remains unchanged, the Red Sox have decided to stand firm on just a four-year offer to the All-Star infielder (per Jen McCaffery of The Athletic).
“Part of the problem is Bregman is seeking a deal of six years or so,” McCaffery wrote. “The Red Sox reportedly were willing to go up to four years, which would allow them to shift some players around the diamond, but six years makes it tough.”

With the news surfacing that Houston has not upgraded its offer to Bregman, the Red Sox have decided to max out at four years.
This also keeps Detroit in the mix, a team managed by Bregman’s former skipper in Houston, A.J. Hinch. Nightengale added in his Jan. 31 article that Bregman could land a “lucrative contract” from Detroit, but would have to move across the infield and play second base.
