Tough loss for WVU as Springfield, Ohio linebacker flips to Louisville
Springfield, Ohio linebacker Taj Powell was the first commitment in West Virginia’s 2026 recruiting class. The key word here is ‘was’ as the three-star target announced on Sunday afternoon that he’s the latest to join Louisville’s recruiting class.
Powell initially committed to the Mountaineers in April. He now becomes the 23rd member of Louisville’s 2026 recruiting class and third from the Buckeye State, joining wide receiver Payton Cook and tight end Nick Lautar.
In addition to Louisville and West Virginia, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect also had scholarship offers from Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami of Ohio, Ohio, Temple, Toledo and others.
Through three games this season, Powell has recorded is into double digit with tackles, has over five stops for a loss and an interception.
Powell is listed by 247Sports as the No. 63 linebacker nationally and the No. 35 overall prospect in Ohio. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite places Powell as the No. 911 overall prospect regardless of position and the No. 73 linebacker.
