Toto Wolff hasn’t given up on his pursuit of Max Verstappen, despite the fact that the reigning world champion won’t race for the team in 2025. Wolff attempted to sign Verstappen to take over for Lewis Hamilton.
Although Verstappen is technically under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, his deal includes multiple exit clauses, indicating he wouldn’t have made such a long-term commitment without a way out.
However, the Dutch driver wasn’t prepared to leave the Milton Keynes team when Wolff approached him earlier this year, despite increasing frustration with the team’s direction. Recently, Verstappen went 10 races without a victory, which placed him in a defensive position in the title fight. Although he dramatically ended that drought in Brazil, it was an unusual race due to heavy rain.
With just three races left in the season, Red Bull may revert to being F1’s third-fastest team, and Verstappen has found the car challenging to drive.
Mercedes has signed Kimi Antonelli alongside George Russell for 2025. If Verstappen becomes available for 2026, those drivers could potentially compete for the seat next to him.
Toto Wolff stated that he gets along ‘very well’ with target Max Verstappen. In an appearance on the High Performance podcast, Wolff discussed their relationship and opened the door to a future move, saying, “Max is a great driver and an interesting personality. God knows what happens in the future.”
