Virginia football is preparing to search for a new quarterback as the NCAA Transfer Portal is set to open next week. Sources have confirmed to Wahoos247 that the team’s current signal-caller is expected to enter the portal.
According to a source, the player informed a few teammates of his decision following Saturday night’s game.
The change comes after Virginia head coach Tony Elliott decided to start Tony Muskett at quarterback in the rivalry game against Virginia Tech, replacing the previous starter. Explaining his decision after the loss to the Hokies, Elliott stated, “I sat back after the last game and just evaluated where we were offensively. We’ve been struggling for the last four games or so. It wasn’t entirely [his] fault — and I told him that. This wasn’t necessarily because of anything specific he did wrong in the last game. He didn’t have much protection, but I felt like I needed to do something to spark the offense. And Tony has provided a spark in the past when inserted into games.”
The quarterback had a challenging stretch recently, posting a 2-to-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio over the last four games and being sacked 31 times in the past six contests, including nine sacks in the loss to SMU.
At the start of the 2024 season, he played a key role in Virginia’s 4-1 start, averaging 242.2 passing yards per game with eight touchdowns and only four interceptions. However, his production dipped significantly over the past five games, failing to surpass 200 passing yards in a single outing and committing turnovers at a higher rate.
Virginia quarterback Anthony Colandrea, who showed promise early in the season, is now expected to seek new opportunities through the transfer portal.
