The Toronto Blue Jays fell just short of a World Series title a few months ago and have wasted no time upgrading their roster in free agency. Since losing Game 7 to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto has added several star players, including Dylan Cease. However, these additions likely signal that Chris Bassitt, now a free agent, has pitched his final inning with the Blue Jays.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball projects that Bassitt could sign a one-year, $16 million deal with the Detroit Tigers. “You could make a case for Bassitt joining almost any team, but our pick is the Detroit Tigers. They could really use a reliable fifth starter, as there’s uncertainty beyond Tarik Skubal in that rotation,” Finkelstein wrote. “Casey Mize, Jack Flaherty, and Reese Olson offer potential upside, but their floor is concerning if the Tigers are aiming to compete now with Skubal.”
The Tigers clearly need rotation help this offseason. With Skubal potentially on the trade block before his contract expires next season, they’ll need a replacement if he moves. Even if Skubal stays, adding a veteran pitcher remains a priority. A dependable arm like Bassitt could be ideal to support a final postseason push alongside Skubal before he hits free agency. With the financial flexibility to sign him, it seems only a matter of time before the Tigers make a move, and Bassitt could be a perfect fit.
