After leading the Cornhuskers to a five-win campaign the previous year, Matt Rhule, the head coach of Nebraska, is poised to make a significant impact with his club as it begins its second season in charge.
Rhule took over a historically rich program, but as he embarks on a new chapter in college football history, program development will look very different than it has in the past. He discussed his thoughts on Lincoln’s future and what attracted him to the Nebraska position in a recent interview with Joel Klatt.
“I observed Nebraska’s facilities, fan base, and financial status when I looked there. One of the few debt-free Big Ten universities that I observed was this one. And I thought, ‘Well, this area is wonderfully positioned in the age we’re about to enter,’ Rhule added. “I observed a record of distinction.”
It is difficult to find this kind of history in the history of collegiate football—Nebraska’s inaugural season was in 1890. However, the Cornhuskers have struggled lately, failing to finish with a winning record or make it to a bowl game since 2016. which Rhule is aware he can alter, beginning with hiring.
“May we hire there?” was my query. Rhule queried. “You know, it’s in the middle of the country, too hard to recruit,” several people said to me. Hey, why don’t you wait to apply for jobs in Florida, Texas, or another similar state? And I kind of developed a crush on the location, but I’ve always wondered. Upon arrival, one is struck by the size of Omaha, the coolness of Lincoln, and the quality of the football played there. Many Division I athletes are emerging from that region.
Even with its recent setback, Nebraska football remains one of the most well-known programs in college sports. However, as Rhule’s faith in the program’s promising future grew, he started to recognize more and more.
Rhule remarked, “I can still wear this and there’s a national pull,” indicating his Nebraska attire. “This is still appropriate for an airport in Florida. I swear, I’m going to acquire a Go Big Red. Thus, we still have some influence. We need to play well now. However, we are able to attract athletes to Nebraska and those who wish to play in such facilities. That’s why I’m happy because our team is not too bad.
With so many returning players, intriguing new players, and an offense that can only get better following a dismal season last year, many people think Nebraska will be among the best teams in the nation. However, Rhule is still playing it safe in front of the much awaited 2024 season.
As a coach, I won’t give too much away, but I believe our team is fairly strong. I stroll around knowing where we’re going with a kind of quiet assurance. Is it for this year? In my opinion, it is. Is it going to be 2020? Indeed, and for that reason, I’m ecstatic about that,” Rhule said.
