This impressive gesture by Patrick Mahomes had gone unnoticed for too long. A viral video reveals a previously overlooked tradition of the Chiefs QB and his leadership style.
In Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season, Chiefs rookie receiver Xavier Worthy scored a 21-yard rushing touchdown. After crossing the goal line, Worthy celebrated by spiking the ball and dancing in front of the fans. Following this exciting play, observant viewers spotted Mahomes rushing to the official to retrieve the football and return it to Worthy.
What might have been seen as a simple gesture is, in fact, something Mahomes does for all his teammates. Recently, a montage showcasing Mahomes’ leadership in action began trending.

Besides Worthy’s TD, the other players included in the video were WR Rashee Rice, running back Isiah Pacheco and lineman Nick Allegretti.
In Week 1 of the 2023 season, Mahomes connected with Rice on his first career reception and first TD as a pro. Rice finished his rookie campaign with 938 receiving yards and seven TDS.

In Week 1 of the 2022 season, Pacheco scored a three-yard touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals. He went on to become the Chiefs’ primary running back, finishing his rookie season with 830 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

A “big guy” TD is always special. In a 2022 playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Allegretti lined up as an eligible receiver and was the prime target for the TD – the first in his NFL career.
