USC Trojans Get Positive Update on Cornerback DeCarlos Nicholson After Transfer Portal Choice
The USC Trojans experienced a significant player departure at the conclusion of the 2024 season. One notable player who initially entered the transfer portal was cornerback DeCarlos Nicholson, but he later decided to withdraw and is preparing for the 2025 season with the team.
As USC’s spring practices are currently in progress, Nicholson spoke to the media about his decision to enter the portal.

“I was just overthinking a lot of things. There was a lot of uncertainty at the end of last season, especially with the upcoming year,” Nicholson explained.
The Trojans wrapped up their season with a 7-6 record after winning the Las Vegas Bowl against the Texas A&M Aggies. They narrowly avoided missing bowl eligibility, clinching their sixth win against the UCLA Bruins.
The team faced several challenging losses during the season, leading to media calls for head coach Lincoln Riley’s dismissal. It was a difficult year, prompting Nicholson to enter the transfer portal. However, he retracted his decision in January.
“I’m here now, this place feels like home. I definitely didn’t want to leave and I’m really happy to be back,” Nicholson said.
Originally, there was some uncertainty regarding his eligibility after entering the portal, but ultimately the NCAA granted his waiver, allowing him to remain with the Trojans for 2025. Nicholson shared his reasons for staying at USC rather than continuing to seek opportunities elsewhere.
“The opportunities both on and off the field are incredible here. The ability to graduate and work toward a master’s degree with USC really matters to me, as does my family’s love for this place,” he stated. “It’s definitely working out for the better.”
Nicholson transferred to USC in 2024 from Mississippi State, contributing in all 13 games and starting three. He played in key matchups against Rutgers, Washington, and Maryland, finishing that season with 27 tackles and five passes defended. In the Las Vegas Bowl, he recorded four tackles.
As a senior in 2025, Nicholson is poised to be a key veteran leader for the Trojans. With significant playing time under his belt, he’s eager to compete for a starting position. The Trojans have also brought in DJ Harvey through the transfer portal and welcome back cornerback Prophet Brown.
Nicholson recognizes his role as a leader this season.
“Now, as a veteran player with a year in the system, I aim to lead, especially guiding the younger players and transfers like DJ, and contributing to the overall defense,” Nicholson expressed.
Among the younger talent are second-year cornerbacks Marcelles Williams and Braylon Conley, alongside incoming true freshmen defensive backs Alex Graham, Trestin Castro, and James Johnson.
