The UK Family & Mark Stoops’ Dealt With Another Challenging Situation, Very Heart-breaking
As football season approaches, Mark Stoops has recently experienced a significant loss in his coaching staff.
Vince Marrow, who has been Stoops’ trusted assistant for many years, has officially taken a role with Jeff Brohm and the Louisville Cardinals. Marrow will now be part of the team working with Kentucky’s main rival, leaving the Cats in search of a tight ends coach this summer.

According to Matt Jones of KSR, Derek Shay is currently the frontrunner for the vacant coaching position.
Hearing the name Derek Shay (current Offensive Analyst on staff) as favorite for the Tight End Coach job
— Matt Jones (@KySportsRadio) June 12, 2025
Shay is currently part of the coaching staff in Lexington, working as an offensive assistant, which gives him an advantage due to his familiarity with the position group and the system.
He joined the team in March 2024 and has spent one season in Lexington. Shay, who is the leading candidate for the tight ends coaching position, previously served as the tight ends coach at Marshall before coming to work with Stoops. His coaching career has also included stints at IMG Academy, LSU, and McNeese State. It seems like this will be an internal promotion following Marrow’s departure.
