The spring transfer portal window in college football sees significantly less high-end talent entering compared to the winter, when more top players are available for programs to target.

Ohio State recently concluded its spring practices, wrapping up with the spring game after several weeks of training. As teams put on pads for the first time, new needs may emerge.

While the Buckeyes are not likely to make many additions through the spring portal, they will be exploring options to bolster depth in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Ohio State has extended an offer to Orion Irving, an offensive tackle from Sam Houston State who just entered the portal. Irving is anticipated to visit Columbus this week and could be a valuable addition for the Buckeyes, as he has two years of eligibility left.

The Buckeyes aren’t in need of starting-level players from the transfer portal since they brought in Ethan Onianwa and Phillip Daniels during the winter. While both players are expected to start, their positions aren’t confirmed yet. Ian Moore and Deontae Armstrong are also available as backup tackle options, along with freshmen Carter Lowe and Jayvon McFadden.

Under former offensive line coach Justin Frye, Ohio State didn’t effectively recruit for the offensive line and missed opportunities to add more players in previous classes. Acquiring Irving could help address this issue and provide the Buckeyes with another tackle option for the next two seasons.

Irving, a 6-foot-6, 310-pound tackle from Houston, Texas, was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2023. Having started for the past two years at Sam Houston State, he is attracting significant interest from Power Five programs.

Next week, multiple transfer portal players will visit Ohio State, and Irving is definitely one to watch
