The Norwich City signing that left within six months and let the Canaries down

This signing at Carrow Road didn’t plan out as expected

The summer transfer market of 2007 was a bustling period for Norwich City. During that season, as many as ten experienced players bid farewell to Carrow Road.

This stirred controversy, with Darren Huckerby condemning the club’s decision to let go of some of their key performers. Consequently, the onus was on the new recruits to fill the shoes of the departed players, adding pressure to their performance. David Strikhava, in particular, is perceived by many as a player who couldn’t rise to the occasion and fulfill his responsibilities at Norwich City.

Norwich City required a goal-scoring striker at Carrow Road

One of the departures from the Canaries in the summer of 2007 was Robert Earnshaw, who joined Derby County. His exit resulted in Norwich losing their leading goal scorer from the previous season. Earnshaw had netted 19 goals in a mere 30 league matches for Norwich in the 2006/07 season, during which they secured a 16th-place finish in the Championship.

Consequently, there was a necessity for the club to identify an alternative goal-scoring source to prevent their descent in the league standings.

One player enlisted to tackle this challenge was Strihavka, a striker recruited by the Canaries from Banik Ostrava in his native Czech Republic.

Securing a four-year contract at Carrow Road, Norwich acquired Strihavka’s services for an undisclosed fee.

Prior to his arrival at Norwich, Strihavka had impressively scored 15 goals in 39 league matches for Ostrava over the preceding two seasons.

Nonetheless, the Czech forward failed to replicate that level of performance during his tenure in East Anglia.

Strihavka struggled to make an impact for Norwich. Shortly after his transfer to Carrow Road, Strihavka’s stint in England was fleeting.

By January 2008, just a few months after joining Norwich, Strihavka and the club mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

Consequently, Norwich received minimal returns on their investment in the striker, both on and off the field.

In his brief spell, Strihavka featured in only ten league matches for Norwich, scoring merely once – the decisive goal in a 1-0 triumph against Crystal Palace in early September 2007.

Despite this, the striker was unsuccessful in making any more notable impacts for the club.

By that time, Norwich sat in 20th place in the Championship standings, holding just a one-point advantage above the relegation zone.

Clearly, Strihavka had not been able to deliver the goal-scoring impact that Norwich had anticipated when they brought him in, considering his previous performance record.

Strihavka’s inability to secure a regular spot in the team and provide the necessary goals for Norwich to climb the table likely added to the challenges faced by manager Peter Grant, who was dismissed by October 2007.
