Marshall Thundering Herd Receive Another Intriguing News After ‘Christian Spears’ Huge Announcement
Marshall Athletics announced on Thursday that Marshall Football has reached a one-game agreement with Wisconsin for the 2028 season.

The match between the Thundering Herd and the Badgers is set to take place on September 2, 2028, marking the opening game for both teams that season.
“We are excited to head to Madison with the Thundering Herd in 2028,” said Christian Spears, Marshall’s Director of Athletics. “These games provide fantastic experiences for our fans and our team. We’re always looking to build momentum and excitement as we approach our SBC season, and we can’t wait for this matchup.”
This game will be the second time the Herd faces Wisconsin in their history.
It will occur during the week marking the 20-year anniversary of their last meeting.
In their only previous encounter on September 6, 2008, Marshall started strong with a 14-point lead early in the second quarter, but the ranked Badgers eventually overcame the Herd.
With the addition of Wisconsin, Marshall now has three of its four non-conference opponents lined up for the 2028 season.
In addition to the Wisconsin game, Marshall will host Ohio in the Battle for the Bell on September 9 that year and has a matchup against Central Connecticut scheduled for a later date.
Including the game with Wisconsin in 2028 indicates that Marshall will face three Big Ten teams over a five-season span.
This stretch begins with a trip to Ohio State on September 21, 2024, followed by another away game at Penn State on September 5, 2026.
