Texas Receives Unfortunate News on No. 1 In-State Cornerback
The Texas Longhorns are in an intense battle for one of the top in-state recruits from the 2027 class with a hated rival.
While it is not as well-known as the “Red River Rivalry” with the Oklahoma Sooners, Texas revived its rivalry with the Texas A&M Aggies last season. The Longhorns beat the Aggies 17-7 in College Station.
According to On3’s Chad Simmons, the rivals are fighting for five-star cornerback John Meredith, but there is one time at the front. Meredith revealed that Texas A&M is in the lead in a recent interview.
Meredith attends Trinity High School in Arlington, Texas.
“Texas A&M is doing the best job with me right now, and they are sitting at the top of my list,” Meredith told Rivals. “Every time I go there, it feels like home. Coach JP (Jordan Peterson) and Coach Mason (Smith) make it feel like I already go there. They are hitting me up every day, and they know me really well. I am treated like family every time I am on campus.”
Meredith is the No. 5 overall prospect, No. 2 cornerback, and top player at his position from Texas in the Rivals Industry Rankings for the 2027 class.
This recent recruiting news comes shortly after head coach Steve Sarkisian wished the Longhorns would have more success with in-state recruiting.
Regardless of the struggles with at-home recruiting, the Longhorns are on a roll otherwise, with two consecutive College Football Playoff appearances. Circa Sportsbook released the odds for each team to reach the CFP in 2025, putting Texas at -350.
